Rent a car

A car on site is NOT an unnecessary luxury. We recommend booking the rent in advance through brokers such as Rentalcars of HolidayCars or directly via the Ryanair website if you book with them. 
Please note that most of those who book with Ryanair also rent a car through this company and the lines at the rental car companie's desks can therefore be very long.

Don't forget this rule: take full insurance when booking a rental car.  It is always cheaper than the insurance they offer when you pick up your car.  The car rental company does not know that you already have insurance because it is independent of their service.  By booking with brokers, you will have to provide all the details again on the spot because the car rental company will only see the reservation. If you want everything faster on site, it is best to book directly with the rental companies themselves. 
Budget has e.g. often interesting quotes, but always read the rules very carefully.  Some well-known rental companies give an "estimated price", but on the spot you are suddenly presented with a different price.

Tips to take into account

Drivers license and age

Before you leave, check whether your drivers license is valid at your destination. For some countries outside the EU you need an international drivers license.

Many rental companies impose a minimum age for the driver: often this is 21 years old, but sometimes it is 25 or even 26 years old. Conversely, some companies also impose a maximum age.

Payment

Rental companies usually require that the main driver has a credit card in her/his name. The balance on the card must be sufficient. Rental companies generally block a certain amount as a deposit. Ask in advance how much this amount will be and make sure you have sufficient reserves for other expenses.

Insurances

Many consumers find it difficult to decide which insurance they need. Inform yourself well about the coverage, the franchise, etc. Try to estimate exactly what you need and do not accept unnecessary or duplicate insurance policies.

The Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)/all risk is the equivalent of Omnium insurance. This insurance covers damage to the vehicle if you are at fault and if the car is stolen. This insurance usually has a franchise. The Super CDW offers the same coverage without a franchise.

If the limit of the third-party liability insurance is not sufficient for you, you may consider taking out Additional Liability Insurance (ALI)/Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS). This policy increases the limit for intervention by the BA.

When picking up the car

It is essential that you and the rental company carefully inspect the vehicle from every angle. Make a note yourself or have the smallest scratches and dents noted on the form attached to the contract. It is best to take photos with date stamps and/or a video of all defects.

When returning the car

Take your time to inspect the vehicle and retake dated photos. Read each document carefully before signing it, and cross out the blank lines in the "Damages" section.

Disputes

If you see that the rental car company has charged unnecessary costs on the account statement after the trip, first write to him to dispute the costs. Enclose all information with this letter that can support your arguments, such as photos. If you booked through a travel agent or website, also inform the person in question about your approach.

If you have paid everything in advance, including the extra insurance from the brokers, you do not have to pay anything extra on the spot!!
